With the demand for clean energy and lower energy costs, air source heat pump technology has been evolving. Heat pumps are an all-in-one solution because they both heat and cool. The launch of "Cold Climate heat pumps" several years ago has provided a great option for homeowners who want to heat and cool their homes comfortably and efficiently with clean energy. Heat pumps must meet a higher level of performance at colder temperatures outside to get an approved "Cold Climate" rating when compared to a standard heat pump. 

HOW IT WORKS

Believe it or not, there is a huge amount of heat in the air outside even when it's cold out! In the winter, a heat pump collects that heat, pumps the heat up to higher quality and moves it into your home. During the summer, the heat pump cycle is reversed, and the heat is collected from your home and moved to the outside air. The main components of a heat pump system are the outdoor unit, the indoor air handler and the interconnecting piping. 

EFFICIENCY

A heat pump system is powered by electricity. A "Cold Climate heat pump" with a variable speed compressor modulates its capacity based on the heating (or cooling) demand. This means you're only paying for the precise amount of power to meet the demand. In fact, all cold-climate rated heat pumps are 175% efficient when it is 5 degrees outside! In the summer, these heat pumps are twice as efficient when compared to a conventional central A/C system. 

COMFORT

A heat pump with a variable speed compressor maintains an even temperature in the house because it ramps the capacity up or down to meet the demand. Another benefit of modulating the capacity is that it will respond to both temperature and humidity when controlled by a "Smart Thermostat." So, on those muggy days, the system will modulate to maintain a dry comfortable home. Remember, on Long Island "it's not the heat, it's the humidity."
